How to create a Virtual Machine using VMware Workstation 10

Here, some of us might have a question in their minds. What actually is a virtual machine?

"A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a computing environment in which an operating system (OS) or program can be installed and run."
-Wikipedia

So, basically, what a virtual machine does is that it installs an Operating System on your hard drive independent of the one you currently are running on and gives you the feature of running the new OS in parallel with your original OS.

Now what is VMware Workstation?

"VMware Workstation is a hypervisor that runs on x64 computers; it enables users to set up one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical machine, and use them simultaneously along with the actual machine. Each virtual machine can execute its own operating system, including versions of Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD, and MS-DOS. VMware Workstation is developed and sold by VMware, Inc., a division of EMC Corporation."

Prerequisites

Bucks to buy VMware Workstation. It isn't a free software. I would highly recommend supporting the developers by buying the original software. You could buy the software from here.

Creating a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation

Step 1:

Open VMware Workstation and click on "Create a New Virtual Machine".

Step 2:

Leave the selection to "Typical" mode and hit the next button unless you are an advanced user. If you are an advanced user, select the "Custom" installation mode. However, here, we go only through the "Typical" installation mode.

Step 3:

Browse your .iso file of the OS and hit next.

Step 4:

Specify the guest OS properties as per your guest OS. In my case, I had to go with Linux and Ubuntu as respected feilds. However it may vary from cases to cases.

Step 5:

Specify the Virtual Machine name and provide a location to store the VM.

Step 6:

Specify the properties for the storage of your VM.

Step 7:

Click on Finish and you're done!
